Mastering Calm in Chaos
Whether you live in Los Angeles and are experiencing the wild fires first hand or watching the heartwrenching devastation from afar, it is a cruel reminder of how vulnerable we, as human beings, really are on this planet. Our home barely survived the Woolsey fire in 2018 so I carry an old wound that has been triggered by the Palisades & Eaton fire. These unexpected challenges and evacuation warnings can cause mental and emotional fatique, so I thought I'd share ideas about how I'm surviving this disaster (while sitting home with all of my photos in the car) with grace and resilience and provide a simple guide to mastering self-care, even when chaos reigns supreme. Although this article is geared toward Angelenos stuck in their homes waiting to evacuate, the strategies work for everyone.
The Desire to Donate and Volunteer: The Truth
In the middle of chaos, it can be confusing to know where to go to help others. Currently, in Los Angeles, there is an overwhelming influx of clothes donated! Remember: the displaced have nowhere to store anything. What we believe is helpful can actually be hindering. Read this article from the LAist to be more informed.
Create a Sanctuary
Have a personal space. Waiting to evacuate and feeling helpless can make you feel like a prisoner. Since the Covid shut-down, I've claimed small spaces in my home to meditate and pray. It can be a simple cozy corner of a room enhanced with calming elements—a soft blanket, your favorite incense, or uplifting music. Personally, I like to surround myself with inspirational books and my little dog. Choose things that comfort you and take a moment to sit with it while you turn off the phone. .This can be your escape, allowing your nervous systyem to rebalance and helping you to refocus and recharge when everything feels too overwhelming.
Practice Mindful Moments
Breathe. Breathing balances out the nervous system and calms the mind. Take a few deep breaths before starting a challenging task (like packing), savor your morning coffee, or reflect on your day before bed. Five minutes of mindful breathing significantly reduces stress levels by about 30%.
Pray. Send loving and healing thoughts out to the universe, no matter what your belief system is.
Meditate. Here's my favorite. I Invoke the Light Within Me. Anyone can meditate. Try it!
Get Moving
Physical activity is often overlooked in crazy times. Moving the body releases endorphins that help uplift your mood and there's no need for a trip to the gym to benefit. A brisk walk or gentle stretching in your living room are effective. My personal favorite is yoga! If you're stuck at home waiting for an evacuation notice (like me), check out Yoga with Adriene on YouTube for a variety of yoga classes. I have found it so wonderful that my local yoga studio, Agoura Power Yoga has remained open during the fires. Check out your area to find a studio open for business.
Digital Detox
Put down your phone. We are all overwhelmed by screens so consider parting with it for an hour while you do something. Constant notifications and social media can heighten stress levels so unplug from your devices when you feel you have all of the information you need to stay safe. A digital detox can help clear your mind and rebalance your mood.
Nourish Your Body with Intention
Nourish yourself. What you eat can dramatically impact your mental and emotional well-being so focus on foods that fuel both your body and mind. When you're on the road, it can be hard to find a balanced meal. In a pinch, opt for the super market instead of fast food and go for pre-made salads, fresh fruit & nuts for your journey. Of course, if you're home, the process of preparing, cooking and enjoying wholesome food can be a soothing ritual.
Connect with Nature
Take a sun bath by a window. Mother Earth has a remarkable ability to ground us and clear feelings of chaos. If the air quality is questionable, find a sunny spot near a window and soak up the warmth for 5-10 minutes. I do this daily with a book. This can lift depression and brighten your day,
Cultivate Gratitude
Transform your mindset. When you're feeling sad or negative, think of simple things you are thankful for. It doesn't have to be huge. A smile over a Facetime call, a considerate neighbor, a delicious meal. Simple. Gratitude transmutes chaos and stress.
Seek Support
Call a friend! Never underestimate the power of reaching out for support. Talk to someone who 'gets you' who can offer new perspectives and coping strategies. Connection can be the best remedy during unpredictable times. When I call my bestie and she makes me belly laugh, my entire day changes for the better. No texting! Call someone.
Finding balance in the midst of this kind of chaos is tricky, but you can do it. When the world is crazy, allow yourself to step out of your normal routine and do a few small things that replenish your desire to give to the others. This behavior will benefit everyone around you. Be safe! Be kind to others! But remember nurture yourself! xoxoLori
