Beauty Breakdown: Vitamin C & Your Skin
If you haven't noticed, currently, the beauty industry seems to be obsessed with Vitamin C. It seems you can’t ignore it. Everywhere you look, there is a product line vetting their version of something with C in it. Allow me to take out all of the hard work for you and lead you right to the king daddy of C’s!
Can I get all Science-y on you? Vitamin C is the most powerful antioxidant to fight the worst enemy for our skin - free radicals! I know what you're thinking...no, Lori! Don't tell me there's another culprit out there damaging my skin!!! I hate to be the bearer of bad news but free radicals are practically worse than UVA/UVB rays. As a matter of fact, when these two bad boys get together, they wreak havoc for your skin! Okay, here's the science-y part:
Free radicals are atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons and can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Once formed these highly reactive radicals can start a chain reaction, like dominoes. Their chief danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs. To prevent free radical damage the body has a defense system of antioxidants.
Whew! Okay, so you get the idea. Free radicals cause 'atmospheric aging' by attacking, damaging and killing healthy skin cells! That, as they say, is the rub...the hard truth..my achilles heel as an esthetician!
